This site is a set of static files. Every page is written ahead of time and served as it was written: there is no account, no login, no comment form, no advertising network and no analytics script anywhere in these pages. That removes most of what a privacy policy normally has to explain.

What remains is worth stating precisely rather than reassuringly, because a site that says it collects nothing at all is usually skipping the part it does not control.

What this site stores

These pages set no cookies and run no tracking code in the browser. Nothing is written to local storage and no identifier follows a reader between pages. The site is served by a commercial hosting provider, and like any web host it processes each request in order to answer it, which can involve short lived server side logs containing technical details such as an address and a requested path. The desk does not receive, query or analyse those logs, and builds no reader profile from them.

Mail to the desk

An email sent to the address on the contact page arrives in an ordinary mailbox and is read by the desk. Its contents, and the address it came from, are kept only for as long as the exchange needs, and are used only to answer it or to correct a page. Nothing from that mailbox is sold, shared with a third party or added to a mailing list, because there is no mailing list to add it to.

Your choices

Because nothing is collected in the browser, there is nothing to opt out of and no consent banner to click. A reader who has written to the desk and wants that correspondence deleted can ask, and it will be deleted. A reader who prefers to leave no trace at all with the host can read the pages through any privacy tool of their choosing; nothing on this site will break if they do.

The rules for reading and quoting sit beside this page in the terms of use, and the desk itself is described in about the chronicle.
